Abstract :

About the Workshop

Fire research in India has seen rapid development in the recent years. Several industries and academic institutes are now taking serious look at fire research. The recently set up National Center for Combustion Research and Development (NCCRD) is developing a dedicated facility for fire research at its IIT Madras center. This workshop aims to provide a platform for the Indian researchers to share their research experiences and explore possibilities of synergized efforts. The workshop sessions will comprise of invited presentations followed by discussions. A complete list of speakers will be communicated to the participants when finalized.
The international participants are Prof. José L. Torero, UQ, Australia (Ed.J. Fire Safety) and Dr. Prateep Chatterjee (FM Global, USA) and the potential Indian participants but not an exhaustive one includes CFEES, CB RI, IGCAR (SRI), ISRO, BARC, Shell India, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Delhi, IIT Gandhi Nagar and Pondicherry Univ.

Reaching IIT Madras

The IIT campus is located on the Sardar Patel Road, midway between the Raj Bhavan and Adyar bus terminus and is around 12 km from Chennai Central Railway Station. Other landmarks include the Guindy Snake Park near the IIT main gate and the Central Leather Reasearch Institute (CLRI) campus opposite the IIT campus. There are direct buses to IIT, which start at the Central Station bus stop (buses nos. 18B, 19S) get down at Gandhi Mandapam, which is at walking distance from the IIT main gate. Registration for the workshop

There is no registration fee for the workshop, however, lease register with the organizers for logistics and conduct of the workshop.

National Center for Combustion Research and Development

Government of India has set up the National Center for Combustion Research & Development (NCCRD) jointly at IIT Madras and IISc Bangalore through the Department of Science an d Technology for enhancing combustion science in the country. The center will focus on the outstanding research issues of three major sectors, namely: (i) Automotive (ii) Power and (i ii) Aerospace. The center is set for formal inauguration in early 2016.

One week course on ‘Fire Dynamics and Fire Protection’

Following the workshop a week long course on “Fire dynamics and Fire Protection” by Professor Jose Torero of University of Queensland, Australia is scheduled at IIT Madras under Government of India sponsored GIAN (Global Initiative of Academic Networks) programme. The course is schedule d from 6th to 12th February 201 6. Like a regular university course, this course will have assignments and examination for evalution of learning. A participant successfully completing the course will be awarded a grade card by the institute. Participant may also choose not to take part in evaluation process. In that case on successful completion of course, a course participation certificate will be issued and participant will also have access to the course material. For new registrants, there is one time GIAN‐portal registration fee of Rs 500 after which one can register for courses under GIAN. Each course has its own fee structure which is detailed in the course brochure. It is recommended to register for the course early, on or before 31st Jan 2016. Registration may close earlier if all 40 seats available get filled. The course registration fee should be drawn in the name of “Registrar IIT Madras” and mailed to Dr. Amit Kumar (see front for the address) to reach him on or before 3rd Feb. 2016.
